Reasoning and Problem-Solving
Captain Trio – Try Reasoning It Out – symbolises opportunities to reason and problem solve at Parkgate. We believe that one of the ways we can help our children become better problem solvers is by repeatedly and explicitly giving them opportunities to develop key problem-solving skills. This includes problems categorised as:

We draw on a range of resources to support the teaching of skills including:

Our STAR thinking acronym - Stop Think Act Review – has been designed to include practical problem-solving prompts, whilst our Talk mats support mathematical thinking, providing sentence starters for oral and written explanations. These strategies have been developed to encourage and empower our children to access and successfully tackle routine and non-routine problems. |
Our green paper challenges are opportunities to apply declarative and procedural knowledge to problem solve, whilst written explanations support reasoning tasks.
SAT questions are used most often in Year 6 and are placed on yellow paper.
On a daily basis, children may have the opportunity to problem solve through retrieval and anchor tasks, independent practice and review. Those swift to understand mathematical concepts are further challenged with tasks designed to deepen their understanding and challenge their thinking.
Children in Years 3 and 4 have the opportunity to take part in the annual First Mathematics Challenge designed for 7 to 9-year-olds.
Whilst children in upper KS2 have the opportunity to engage in enrichment mornings at President Kennedy – our Outstanding feeder secondary school.
